“Operation MySpace” concert is set for Monday, March 10. Troops in Kuwait preparing to deploy into Iraq will get an up close seat at the concert which will also stream live on the internet via the Operation MySpace page.
The concert is being presented in cooperation with the Defense Department’s Armed Forces Entertainment and America Supports You programs. Some of today’s most popular music acts such as Filter, Disturbed, The Pussycat Dolls and Jessica Simpson will rock the Kuwaiti desert for the troops stationed in the country. Comedian Carlos Mencia will host the three-plus hour event.

“This MySpaceLive! concert is an exciting event because it communicates to our troops that people from all walks of life and from all types of companies support their service to our country,” said Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense of internal communication and public liaison. “MySpace is a great medium to connect our military members and their families, who serve in 177 countries, to the folks back home. We are so glad to have MySpace as part of the team working with both America Supports You and Armed Forces Entertainment.”

The concert participants are excited as well. “It’s truly an honor to perform for the troops,” Jessica Simpson said. “Through Operation MySpace, I get to serve my country by doing what I love to do in front of thousands of brave men in uniform. It’s every girl’s dream!”
The Pussycat Dolls had similar sentiments. “We’re so excited to be performing for the troops and supporting our Armed Forces overseas,” the group said in a statement.
FX television network will broadcast a condensed one-hour version of the show on April 12 for those who won’t be able to catch it live.

Eating like kings

March 7, 2008

Not an actual image, but maybe very close from what Alex has said. Eight to ten different entrees and tons of desserts. Better than a Vegas buffet. Our sailor is definitely enjoying the eating!

Arrived

March 7, 2008

It’s a nine hour time difference, but I’ve never been so excited to hear Alex’s voice. Even if it was just 2 minutes. After such a travel schedule, he sounded great. Thank you, USO, for the phone card! I am sure Mom and Dad were thrilled to hear from their favorite SeaBee as well. Looking forward to more reports about the base at the in between place. We are proud of you, Alex!

Please pray for Alex this week as he “allegedly”- because we are dealing with the military here:)- gets his small pox vaccine. He said others have already gotten it and experiencing ill side effects. Please pray that Alex doesn’t get sick or too sore.

The Hardest Thing

February 20, 2008

Goodbye is always difficult. BUT I think we made it as positive as could be. We even managed no tears. Well, that was a miracle. And I’m not saying that tears weren’t shed later;)

Alex is sitting on go. He’s super focused and ready to be on his way. Waiting on his small pox vaccine and assessment of his gear. Pray for him that the small pox shot doesn’t make him sick.

Alex begins in-processing tomorrow morning on base in Gulfport. Say a prayer for him if you think about it for good health, good friends, and favor with his commanders. There is so much stuff to have for a deployment. Since Iraq is desert area, it’s recommended that soldiers wear an Under-Armor like t-shirt and boxers because it wicks sweat away to keep you cool and dry. Well, maybe not “cool” cool in the desert but better than cotton. Actual Under-Armor is kinda expensive when you need a week’s worth, and Alex is a bargain hunter. Well, as we made the Dirt Cheap rounds after Christmas while we were in Mississippi, we found an Under-Armor like shirt and boxers for $6.49 and $4.99 a piece. It was a Christmas miracle! Our favorite sailor also needed running shoes for PT and sunglasses. Alex is a connoisseur of sunglasses and found a great pair of Costa del Mars. They have eye shields to help particularly with sand and wind. Perfect for the Middle East! Those didn’t come from Dirt Cheap. Ha. BUT he found Nike running shoes on sale for $40. Pictures to come.Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
